How To Read And Write Music (Dennis R. Sinnott)

You may recall my earlier article entitled: Songwriters – can you sight read? In this article I touched on how easy it is to be able to read and write music.

Let’s expand on this. Whether you play a musical instrument or not, if you’re reading this article, you can easily read and write music. What’s more, I’ll prove it to you.

Reading notes is like reading the alphabet.

Remember, in music, only the first seven letters are used – i.e A- B - C -D -E -F - G.

Look at any piano or keyboard – and you will see black and white keys.

If you take a closer look at the picture below – you’ll see that the black notes are always in groups of TWO, then THREE, then TWO and so on, right across the keyboard.

When you’re starting off, the first note to look for on a keyboard, is the “C” note. It’s really easy to find. The “C” note is always the white note just before any pair of two black notes (look at the diagram below). Once you know the “C” note, you will know where every note on a keyboard is - just by reciting the alphabet! For example, the next note above “C” is “D” then “E” “F” “G” and so on. Remember, once you go above “G” you start all over with “A” “B” “C” and so on. How easy is that?!!

The black notes are the “in betweens” we call Sharps and Flats. The Sharps have this sign: “#” and the Flats this sign: “b”. More about black notes, or Sharps and Flats - shortly. Right now, when you start off learning to sight read, the first thing after memorizing the names of the notes, is to play a “Key”. In music, every note has a “Major” and a “Minor” key. C Major is normally the easiest of all the keys to play – simply because there are only white notes – that is the key I recommend you start with. (As a matter of interest, some people write all their songs out in C Major – as a convenient key, especially to register their music. I believe Irving Berlin wrote all his music in F# Major which is all black notes – but we’re getting ahead of ourselves!).

Playing a scale in the key of C Major starts on one “C” then playing every white note up to the next “C” above. This is called an octave. Once you’ve done this – you’ve played a scale in C Major. In my follow up article, I’ll show you how this looks in music.
